I chose the film Mean Girls to recreate for this project. In high school cliques were very prevalent, and the mean girls honestly thought that they ruled the school. They realized this wasn’t necessarily true, especially when one of the band girls won prom queen. This really relates to the plotline of Mean Girls, and I thought it would be interesting to recreate high school in the movie Mean Girls. It was really fun to be the stereotypical queen bee, Regina George. Her character is very different from my own, which made it very entertaining to channel my inner Regina. In this photo I, as Regina, am pushing Cady into the trashcan. I think this photo was successful because this was such an iconic scene. It was also fun to reenact the movie scene where they discuss how the limit does not exist, because this was one of my favorite scenes from the entire movie. My best friend Taylor played the part of Erin Samuels, and I adoringly stared at the back of her (his) head as I played the part of Cady. I really enjoyed setting up the picture where I am portraying Gretchen Wieners as she is holding the infamous Burn Book. I pulled up a photo of the book on my laptop and pretended to be holding it. This was simple yet really captured the feel of the scene. It was also fun to recreate the scene where Gretchen does the trust fall activity and there is hardly anyone there to catch her. In the last movie still, I am recreating the debate scene between Cady and her opponent. These are all classic scenes from such an iconic movie that really influenced my generation.

Part of the reason why Mean Girls remains at the forefront of our pop-culture lexicon here on its 10th anniversary is, beyond its humor and its quotability, is because it rings so true about the high school experience. For as much credit is due to Tina Fey for writing the film script, Fey was operating from source material by Rosalind Wiseman, whose nonfiction bookQueen Bees & Wannabes served as inspiration and source material for the movie.

For those only familiar with the movie, parts of Wiseman's book, which culls anecdotes from teens and parents to dole out advice, will feel very familiar. She discusses girls' tendency to dress up in slutty costumes for Halloween. At one point she describes how she goes to classrooms and ask girls to close their eyes and raise their hands if they 'have had a friend gossip about them, talk behind their back, force them to stop being friends with someone, or be exclusive.' She explains that one girl will say, 'Ms. Wiseman, maybe this happens at other schools you work at, but at this school we don’t have exclusive cliques like that.' This girl is generally your Regina George.
